From the author: A fine fibril structure of a thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer (TLCP, a poly(ester amide)) can be developed in a shear flow field of a thermoplastic matrix (polystyrene, PS). Addition of a third component, a poly(styrene-co-maleic anhydride) (SMA), that interacts with the thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer facilitates the structural development of the TLCP phase by acting at the interface. Moreover, it brings about good adhesion at the interface and enables the dispersed liquid crystalline polymer phase to be deformed in shear flow without strong elongation even though the viscosity of the matrix is much lower than that of the liquid crystalline polymer. The mechanical properties were substantially improved because of both the good adhesion at the interface and fibril generation, which were ascribed to the SM! A interaction. These results have important implications in th! at they provide a means to produce strong and tough in-situ composites when the viscosity of the matrix polymer is lower than that of the dispersed liquid crystalline polymer which is Immiscible with the matrix polymer. Morphological observations determined the significance of the third component (SMA) in immiscible polymer blends, and an optimum amount of SMA exists for best mechanical performance.

Distributed by Thomson GaleWith advanc! es in technology, a mobile device today is like a mini PC that provides voice and data services in the form of smart-phones. Phenomenal increase in data services which enable mobile communication access to critical aspects of human society/life has led to standardization of SAE/LTE (System Architecture Evolution/Long Term Evolution) by 3GPP and IEEE 802.16e/WiMAX. SAE/LTE is also known as Evolved Packet System (EPS). This book addresses the newer security issues that have arisen as a result of penetration of mobile communications and standardization. In particular, the book focuses on the latest security developments in 3GPP SAE/LTE and WiMAX. The intended audience for this book are mobile network and device architects, designers, researchers and students. The goal of the authors, who have a combined experience of more than 25 years in mobile security standardization, architecture, research, and education, is to provide the book's readers with up-to-date information about t! he architecture and challenges of EPS and WiMAX security. The! book ha s six chapters; the first three chapters are intended to be introductory ones, and the remaining three chapters provide an in-depth assessment of security provisions. Chapter 1 provides a background to the Next Generation Mobile Networks (NGMN) activity and requirements. Chapter 2 provides an overview of security, telecommunication systems and their requirements. Chapter 3 provides some background information on standardization. Chapter 4 discusses the EPS (or SAE/LTE) security architecture developed by 3GPP, in particular, the authentication and key agreement method for SAE/LTE together with newly defined key hierarchy. This chapter also addresses the challenging aspects of SAE/LTE interworking and mobility with UMTS together with the necessary key-exchange technologies. The focus of Chapter 5 is WiMAX (IEEE 802.16) security and provides an in-depth discussion of the WiMAX security requirements, the authentication aspects of PKMv2, and the overall WiMAX network security asp! ects. Chapter 6 briefly covers security for (i) Home(evolved)NodeB [H(e)NB is the Femto solution from 3GPP], (ii) Machine-to-Machine (M2M) security and (iii) Multimedia Broadcast and Multicast Service (MBMS) and Group Key Management. The Housemaid Reproduction Poster Print Russian Style A 11 x 17 Inches - 28cm x 44cm

Carmen - A Hip Hopera

  • A contemporary, urban retelling of theic story, Carmen: A Hip Hopera follows the life of a police sergeant whose world is turned upside down when an irresistible woman enters his life. Through song, the star-studded cast tells the tale of their passionate romance and tragic demise. It's Moulin Rouge done hip-hop style!Running Time: 88 min. Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: MUSICALS Rating:

Although Beyoncé Knowles is not yet 30, the sensual superstar has already succeeded on many levels: as a dancer, singer, composer, model, music producer, video director and actress. Like rap star/entrepreneur Jay-Z, with whom Beyoncé recently married, she has evolved into a businesswoman, who with her designer-mother, Tina Knowles, markets Beyoncé's personal fashion line, House of Dereon. The multi-talented, global entertainer lends her name and image to many commercial and philanthropic ventures. She is th! e spokeswoman for L'Oreal and appears in ads for Pepsi and Ford.

This biography tells the story of a young, talented woman's meteoric rise in the entertainment industry. From a shy, demure Catholic schoolgirl growing up in Houston, Texas, Beyoncé Knowles eventually morphed into the first African-American woman to win the Songwriter of the Year Award from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers Pop Music Awards. The once-shy suburban schoolgirl has gone far beyond her original dream of becoming a first-rate musician and vocalist. With the assistance of her manager-fatherâ€"former Xerox executive Mathew Knowlesâ€"and as lead singer of the R&B girl group Destiny's Child (the world's all-time bestselling female group), Beyoncé has won 10 Grammy Awards and two Golden Globe nominations. Her albums have reached more than 20 million people worldwide, and she has become a cultural icon to music lovers everywhere as well as a role model for young wome! n. Author Janice Arenofsky gives students and general readers ! alike an insightful look at a music and fashion icon who has a unique niche in popular culture today. Complete with photos, a timeline, and a thorough bibliography.

OBSESSED - DVD MovieObsessed is one of those movies best described as “a stylish thriller”: the characters are mostly young and gorgeous, with their white-collar gigs, designer duds, and fancy cars, and if there’s not much of substance to be found beneath those sleek, polished surfaces, well, who says a story must have a message to be entertaining? The comparisons to Fatal Attraction (with its jilted would-be lover going all psycho on the object of her, uh, affections) and Disclosure (with its reverse sexual harassment) are apt enough, but Obsessed is a little different. For starters, unlike the character played by Michael Douglas in Attraction, this film’s Derek Charles (Idris Elba) does little to encourage Lisa Sheridan (Ali Larter), the temp worker at his asset-m! anagement firm who gloms onto him like a lamprey sucking on its unwilling host; for another, Derek’s wife, Sharon (Beyonce Knowles), is no wallflower who stands idly and ignorantly by while her life is shredded by her hubby’s evasions and the increasingly crazed tactics of the woman who’s stalking him (it’s to the credit of director Steve Shill and screenwriter David Loughery that nothing whatsoever is made of the fact that Derek is black and Lisa is white). Still, the holes in the plot are big enough to drive several Mercedes sedans through. For one thing, Lisa’s fixation on Derek seems to come out of nowhere (if she has a past, we’re not told about it); what's more, even if Derek has broken his deal with Sharon not to have any female assistants (she was once one herself), it seems mighty extreme for her to kick him out of the house for three months simply for not coming completely clean about his mostly-innocent dealings with Lisa. Still, the film man! ages to make the viewer feel Derek’s helpless desperation at! being t argeted by this manipulative nut job, and when Sharon finally confronts her family’s tormentor at the end (“You think you’re crazy? I’ll show you crazy!”), the result is silly but somehow satisfying. --Sam GrahamFrench edition of the highly anticipated 2003 debut album from Beyonce Knowles includes the hidden bonus track, 'Daddy' which appears on the US version as well, plus three additional bonus cuts, 'Work It Out' (Top 10 solo single from Austin Powers In Goldmember 3), 'Bonnie & Clyde '03' (feat. Jay-Z), & the French only track 'Bienvenue' (feat. 1AM). Sony. The perfect timing of Beyonce Knowles’ career moves continues with the release of her debut solo album. Dangerously in Love’s best music is wildly up-to-date, craftily designed for both maximum street acceptance and positioning as some of the most cutting-edge stuff on current radio. The brash first single, "Crazy in Love," melds Jay-Z with an unstoppable Chi-Lites horn sample, shape-shif! ting into something brand new. Collaborations with Outkast’s Big Boi and Sean Paul also prick up the ears, while changes of pace like "Be with You" and "Speechless" achieve their aim with credibility. The disc becomes far too ballad heavy in its second half, but the key stuff is the noise she brings. --Rickey Wright

It must be a part of human nature to love drama. We never would have sold as many records -- and we never would have been this popular -- if our member changes did not happen. Up until that point, we were squeaky-clean nice girls who couldn't get on the cover of any magazines. --Beyoncé Knowles

They're beautiful, they're talented, they're bootylicious . . .

From first kisses and broken hearts to pillow fights and legal battles to losing friends and finding strength in God, Beyoncé Knowles, Kelly Rowland, and Michelle Williams share it all. Their example of survival has made Destiny's Child one of the most beloved, bestselling female grou! ps ever.

Here for the first time, the three share the strugg! les that have made them stronger, from Beyoncé's battles with weight loss and shyness, Kelly's coming to terms with growing up without a dad, and Michelle's triumph over grade-school bullies. They've grown up under the media microscope, and have had to deal with lineup changes and media rumors. Now they set the record straight.

The demands and drama, the schedules and scrutiny -- from the tour bus to the dressing rooms to backstage at awards shows, Beyoncé, Kelly, and Michelle talk about what it takes to be successful. Whether it's changing outfits in the rain, changing their hair color, or changing a name, they've done it.

Don't be mistaken, they're not a prefab group of young girls -- they're smart, independent women with a lot of soul. When these ladies had only minutes of studio time to work with Wyclef Jean to remix one of their songs, they didn't stress, they just started singing faster -- and the result was a unique sound that put them on the map. Everyone has caught ! on to the Destiny's Child groove -- Whitney Houston, Bono, and Michael Jackson have all given them props, and the King of Pop himself serenaded them with a rendition of “Bootylicious.”

Beyoncé, Kelly, and Michelle take you behind the scenes of a video rehearsal at which Aaliyah rewound their practice music, to the set of Austin Powers 3, where a starstruck Beyoncé felt anything but foxy before auditioning for the part of Foxxy Cleopatra, and backstage at the Grammys, where a last-minute costume change fiasco nearly kept Michelle from going onstage.

With total honesty, these soul survivors not only dish the details of their past, but share their hopes, plans, and dreams for the future.A contemporary, urban retelling of the classic story, Carmen: A Hip Hopera follows the life of a police sergeant whose world is turned upside down when an irresistible woman enters his life. Recasting Bizet's classic opera as a musical tale in the 'hood, Carmen: A Hip Hopera proves that the plot's not the thing. By retaining the story but jettisoning Bizet's individual musical numbers that propel the tragedy to its inevitable conclusion, this Carmen founders on familiarity: it's just another soap opera about two lovers whose tryst proves fatal. Occasionally, the music quotes Bizet's famous themes, but most of the rapping and singing sound interchangeable. What makes this Carmen worth seeing, however, is the scintillating performance of Beyoncé Knowles (of the trio Destiny's Child) in the lead role. From her first entrance in a dazzling red gown, Knowles shows off a vibrant, magnetic personality; the camera loves her, as her group's many music videos have shown, but they only hint at how impressively she holds the screen. Can she act? The jury's still out, but C! armen: A Hip Hopera--however disappointing this hybrid is in most ways--showcases a compelling movie-star presence. --Kevin Filipski

Color of Night

  • New York psychologist Dr. Bill Capa, haunted by the bizarre suicide of a patient, abandons his successful practice and relocates to Los Angeles. Immediately he finds himself entangled in an explosive sexual relationship with a beautiful but enigmatic woman named Rose, who may hold the key to the mysterious burtal murder of his friend and colleague. From the novel of the same namewhich has sold over one million copies in 43 languagesthis "sophisticated adaptation of Marguerite Duras' best-selling memoirs" (Variety) smolders on the screen. "Masterfully acted and beautifully photographed" (Critics' Choice), The Lover brilliantly captures the essence of sexual awakening and forbidden desire like no other film has donebeforeor since. Jane March is mesmerizing in the role of a poor French teenager who engages in an illicit affair with a wealthy Chinese ! heir (Tony Leung) in 1920s Saigon. For the first time in her young life she has control, and she wields it deftly over her besotted lover throughout a series of clandestine meetings and torrid encounters. But though the lovers are able to transcend their differences in age, race and class'theirs is a future that French colonial Vietnamese society will never allow.Lovely to look at, this story reveals little more than the characters' nude bodies. Like couples whose only attraction is physical, this has little to offer once it leaves the bedroom. We never learn the interests or inner workings of the lovers in question. They become nothing more than attractive bodies, which makes this little more than a shallow exercise in sexuality. The story is based on the controversial, and supposedly autobiographical, bestseller by experimental French novelist Marguerite Duras. It tells the story of a young French schoolgirl who becomes sexually involved with a sophisticated, older Asian ! man. Set in Indochina in the late 1920s, this is stunningly ph! otograph ed and artfully directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud. That said, the lack of a more satisfying plot means this is merely tastefully produced soft porn. --Rochelle O'Gorman Haunted by the bizarre suicide of a patient, New York psychologist Dr. Bill Capa abandons his successful practice and relocates to L.A., but his encounters there prove as shocking as the chilling event he has run away from, and he immediately finds himself entangled in an explosive sexual relationship with a beautiful but enigmatic woman named Rose, and the investigation into the brutal stabbing murder of a friend and colleague, Dr. Bob Moore. A moth drawn to a flame, Dr. Capa is lured to Rose by his sexual cravings, and he discovers this woman has the power to fulfill his most reckless erotic fantasies. Yet, the more she satisfies him, the more he finds himself enslaved by her manipulation and control. As Capa gets closer to identifying the killer of his patient, Rose becomes an equally tantalizing myst! ery that he must solve -- if he can stay alive long enough to avoid a lunatic murderer who is stalking him.Psychological twists and turns strangle the plot of this disappointing effort from the director of The Stunt Man, Richard Rush. Emotionally damaged psychiatrist Bruce Willis leaves his practice behind and moves to LA when a patient commits suicide in front of him. Out of the goodness of his broken heart, he takes over the practice of a murdered colleague (Scott Bakula). Jane March is the needy but mysterious woman who literally crashes into his life, making sexual advances the good doctor soon reciprocates. What March seems to need most, however, is underwear. The plot and the dialogue vacillate between silly and inane, leaving us with some so-so sex and overblown performances. This could explain why it was the winner of the 1995 Razzie Award for Worst Picture. If you want a more effective thriller that delves into damaged psyches, take another look at Alfred Hi! tchcock's Vertigo. --Rochelle O'Gorman

Marvel Comics is gearing up for a big Ultimate Universe winter with the release of the Ultimate Marvel Free Sampler. The special is a sneak peek for upcoming titles, including December's Ultimates 3 #1 and January's Ultimate Iron Man II #1 and Ultimate Human #1. But it's what these titles are leading up to that might be of new interest to Marvel followers!

We've all heard of the Big Bang, and yet few of us truly know what it is.

Renowned for making difficult ideas much less difficult than t! hey might first appear, Simon Singh is our perfect guide to explaining why cosmologists believe that the Big Bang is an accurate description of the origin and evolution of the universe.

This highly readable and entertaining book tells the story of the many brilliant, often eccentric scientists who fought against the establishment idea of an eternal and unchanging cosmos. From such early Greek cosmologists as Anaximander to recent satellite measurements taken deep in space, Big Bang is a narrative full of anecdotes and personal histories. With characteristic clarity, Simon Singh tells the centuries-long story of mankind's attempt to understand how the universe came to be, a story which itself begins some 14 billion years ago (give or take a billion years). Simon Singh shows us that it is within the capability of all of us -- in his expert hands -- to understand the Big Bang: the fundamental theory in all of science, and a high point -- perhaps the high point --! of human achievement.

A baffling array of science books cl! aim to r eveal how the mysteries of the universe have been discovered, but Simon Singh's Big Bang actually delivers on that promise. General readers will find it to be among the very best books dealing with cosmology, because Singh follows the same plan he used in his brilliant Code Book: he puts people--not equations--first in the story. By linking the progression of the Big Bang theory with the scientists who built it up bit by bit, Singh also uncovers an important truth about how such ideas grow.
Death is an essential element in the progress of science, since it takes care of conservative scientists of a previous generation reluctant to let go of an old, fallacious theory and embrace a new and accurate one.
As harsh as this statement seems, even Einstein defended an outmoded idea about the universe when an unknown interloper published equations challenging the great man. Einstein didn't have to die for cosmology to move forward (he reluctan! tly apologized for being wrong), but stories like this one show how difficult it can sometimes be for new theories to take root. Fred Hoyle, who coined the term "big bang" as a way to ridicule the idea of a universe expanding from some tiny origin point, strongly believed that the cosmos was in a steady state. But Singh shows how Hoyle's research, meant to prove the contrary, added evidence to the expansion model. Big Bang is also a history of astronomical observation, describing the development of new telescopes that were crucial to the development of cosmology. Handwritten summary notes at the end of each long chapter add a charming, classroom feel to this revealing and very readable book. --Therese LittletonStarring: Naseeruddin Shah, Dimple Kapadia, Saif Ali Khan, Boman IraniSynopsis:Being Cyrus is Saif Ali Khan's next film after the hugely successful 'Salaam Namaste' and 'Parineeta' and marks his debut in English language cinema, revealing his versatility! and ability to break the usual mould. The film revolves aroun! d the ra ther dysfunctional Sethna family and swings between Panchgani, a small hill station where retired sculptor Dinshaw Sethna (Naseerudin Shah) lives in relative isolation with his wife (Dimple Kapadia) and an old dilapidated building in Bombay where the other Sethnas, played by Boman Irani and Simone Singh, live. Back in Mumbai his brother, Farokh lives with his wife Tina and their father. Cyrus is not related to any of them, but out of the blue turns up at Dinshaw's hou! se in Panchgani. He wants to be an assistant to Dinshaw, he wants to learn sculpting and pottery and ends up staying on for a year with the Sethna's in Panchgani. During this time there seems to be an affair going on between Katy and Cyrus. During his stay many clandestine activities involving Cyrus takes place. He receives some money for an undisclosed reason and he is shown working in a lab on something secret. Next Cyrus adopts the home of Farokh Sethna in Mumbai. They live in a typical Parsi colony in Mumbai. Their father lives in a small room in their apartment, but his son Farokh does not treat him well. Cyrus befriends their father. However, Farokh dislikes this man instantly and does not trust him. Also simultaneously, Katy keeps getting some mysterious calls from Mumbai. Tina, Farokh's wife befriends a cop, Lovely. Bi and Song Hye Gyo made a very fun-loving couple that couldn't stop getting at each other's throats. Every time they wanted to say something nice to each other they ended up saying things completely opposite to what they really meant! Throughout this drama, they continually quarrel with each other because of their stubborn selves. Han Ji Eun had lost her parents at a young age and was living in the house that her father had built and that she had been living in all her life. Because of her "friends" she is given the opportunity to go to China. This seemed innocent enough, but really, her friends had gotten themselves in a financial crisis, so they felt that after they got her out of the country they could sell her house and pay them off. Not knowing this, Ji Eun goes to China and ends up not having a place to stay. She goes! to the hotel - her friends claimed to have gotten her a room - and finds that they had not gotten a room for her. Fortunately she runs into Yu Min Hyuk and is given a room. Meanwhile... Lee Young Jea is a famous rising star in Korea that has a real attitude problem. He is given a film role that is located in China and goes there to fulfill this task. While in the airplane he is put in the seat next to Ji Eun. After Ji Eun gets home she finds that all her stuff has been taken out and that someone new was moving in. In rage she goes to find her friends, but is unsuccessful. After this she goes back to the house to find that the person who had moved in was none other than Lee Young Jea. Because Ji Eun did not have a place to go Young Jea lets her stay on one condition... She had to be his housemaid. This is what brings me to the other details. While they live together they begin to develop feelings towards each other but to try to avoid them they begin to fight and find ways ! of insulting each other.Hwang Jin Yi'' delivers a novel interp! retation of one of the most celebrated women in the Joseon Kingdom era (1392-1910), but shines just dimly on the silver screen. The shortcomings of the highly anticipated film regrettably eclipse its unique plot, all-star cast and crew, and grand-scale production. The film traces the life of Hwang Jin Yi, a 16th century gisaeng - a female entertainer-artist similar to the Japanese geisha - remembered as both a distinguished poet and alluring femme fatale. Born into a respected noble family, the charming Hwang leads a peaceful life in the city of Songdo. But when her scandalous birth secrets are revealed, she voluntarily chooses the lowly life of a gisaeng. Hwang, brought to life by Song Hye-gyo, evolves from an innocent damsel to smoldering temptress. Song gives an impressive performance of her character's winding emotional journey, and breaks away from her image as a sweet-faced starlet. "Hwang'' is original in both senses of the word. The film portrays not so much the artistic gisaeng we saw hitherto in other works, but the human Hwang based on the novel of the same title by North Korean writer Hong Seok-jung.

Vengeance Trilogy (Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance / Oldboy / Lady Vengeance) [Blu-ray]

  • VENGEANCE TRILOGY BLU-RAY (BLU-RAY DISC)

In 1959 South Korea was mired in poverty. By 1979 it had a powerful industrial economy and a vibrant civil society in the making, which would lead to a democratic breakthrough eight years later. The transformation took place during the years of Park Chung Hee’s presidency. Park seized power in a coup in 1961 and ruled as a virtual dictator until his assassination in October 1979. He is credited with modernizing South Korea, but at a huge political and social cost.

South Korea’s political landscape under Park defies easy categorization. The state was predatory yet technocratic, reform-minded yet quick to crack down on dissidents in the name of political order. The nation was balanced uneasily between opposition forces calling for democratic reforms and the Park government’s obsession with economic growth. The chaebol (a powerful conglome! rate of multinationals based in South Korea) received massive government support to pioneer new growth industries, even as a nationwide campaign of economic shock therapyâ€"interest hikes, devaluation, and wage cutsâ€"met strong public resistance and caused considerable hardship.

This landmark volume examines South Korea’s era of development as a study in the complex politics of modernization. Drawing on an extraordinary range of sources in both English and Korean, these essays recover and contextualize many of the ambiguities in South Korea’s trajectory from poverty to a sustainable high rate of economic growth.

The ultimate collection of three films by acclaimed Korean director Chan-wook Park that includes Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Oldboy, and Lady Vengeance, 3 of Tartan’s all-time top releases .

Heaven's Prisoners

  • A Vietnam vet/ex-detective leaves New Orleans with his wife for a quieter life in Louisiana's bayou. However, a plane crash on the Gulf gets him involved in the world of murder and deception.Running Time: 106 min. Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: DRAMA Rating: R Age: 794043672521 UPC: 794043672521 Manufacturer No: N6725
In a town where success is the ultimate aphrodisiac, two aspiring players find themselves living their wildest fantasies. Jarvis Scott (Robert Patrick) is an unknown writer whose luck changes when he meets a gorgeous actress named Danny (Teri Hatcher). Both lives are turned upside down when Jarvis writes a sizzling script about their tempestuous relationship and Danny is willing to do anything to get the role all of Hollywood wants. Soon, it becomes impossible to separate fact from fiction as these dangerous lovers push themselves, sexually and emotionally, to the breaking point.! Few women in America are as adored -- and accessible -- as Teri Hatcher. As the Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild award-winner for her portrayal of ditzy divorcee Susan Mayer on ABC’s hit series Desperate Housewives, she’s attained a level of success late in her career (in Hollywood terms, anyway) that most women would kill for. But in real life, Teri deals with the same issues as so many women: divorce, single motherhood, bad dates, turning forty . . . So it’s no surprise that when Burnt Toast was published in hardcover, it received tremendous attention and went on to become a major national bestseller.

Full of Teri’s foibles and successes, unexpected vulnerability, and frank openness (from looking in the refrigerator for Mr. Right to being told by her daughter’s pediatrician that she should date more), Burnt Toast is a funny, intimate, uplifting portrait of one woman’s daily struggles and successes on the road to living an insp! ired life.A Vietnam vet/ex-detective leaves New Orleans with h! is wife for a quieter life in Louisiana's bayou. However, a plane crash on the Gulf gets him involved in the world of murder and deception. When he emerged from film school in the mid-1980s, director Phil Joanou was touted as the next Steven Spielberg, perhaps because Spielberg took him on as a protégé briefly. Since then, it's been "Phil who?" thanks to a series of mediocre thrillers like this one. Based on one of a series of novels by James Lee Burke about a troubled ex-cop named Dave Robicheaux, this film sat on the shelf for a couple of years before finally being released in 1995. Alec Baldwin plays Robicheaux, a recovering alcoholic who has put life on the New Orleans police department behind him--until a plane crashes in the lake next to his house. He rescues a young Central American girl from the wreck and adopts her--and winds up involved in a gumbo of drug running and dirty dealing involving an old pal named Bubba. Tip-off that this movie should have gone straight to video! : Bubba is played by Eric Roberts. Redeeming feature (at least for men, who are all dogs, as everyone knows): a Teri Hatcher nude scene. --Marshall Fine

Who knew that when he ordered the special, he d get the dish of his life? David Duchovny ('the X-Files ) and Minnie Driver (Good Will Hunting) ignite sparks in this warm-hearted winner (JeffCraig, 'sixty Second Preview ) about a widower and a waitress who meet and fall in love. Featuring an incredible all-star cast, this hilarious romantic comedy delivers a lot of laughs, tears and joysthat will make your spirits soar. It took a lot of cajoling to get Bob (Duchovny), a recently widowed architect, ! to go on a blind date at a quirky Irish-Italian eatery. Once there, he's smitten instantly not with his date but with the sharp-witted waitress, Grace (Driver). With unsolicitedhelp from Grace's matchmaking grandfather (Carroll O Connor), Bob asks her out. And as their relationship blossoms, everything seems to be going great, until an unbelievable truth is revealed one that could easily break both of their hearts for good.Bob Rueland (David Duchovny) and Grace Briggs (Minnie Driver) have very little in common. Granted, they both live in Chicago and they're both a bit lovelorn, but that's about it. Still, fate has something in mind for these two somewhat-depressed souls (a construction worker and budding artist, respectively), who've both recently had brushes with death--he's a recent widower, she's just recovered from a heart transplant--and are a little more serious than their friends and relatives. After a series of misbegotten blind dates and almost-meetings, though, t! hese two finally get together, and find that they fit seamless! ly with each other. Despite their differences, they have a lot in common--in fact, quite a lot. It seems that the heart that now beats inside Grace's chest once belonged to Bob's wife (Joely Richardson), who died in a car crash. Coincidence? We think not.

A gentle, pleasing romantic comedy, Return to Me marks the directorial debut of Bonnie Hunt, an acclaimed actress known most famously for her role as Renee Zellweger's sister in Jerry Maguire. A shining, happy bright spot in whatever role she's in, Hunt has also invested the film with her trademark brand of humor: dry but sincere, sarcastic but not caustic, and with a deep current of humanity and romance. In the midst of all the permutations that fate surrounds them with, Driver and Duchovny make a pleasantly low-key couple; the triumph of the film is that despite all the contrived angst, the romance is never overly saccharine. They provide a quiet center in a film that has a fair amount of chaos in it, pa! rticularly due to Driver's extended family of Irish and Italian relatives (which occasionally tips the film into cutesy territory) and most hilariously to Driver's best friend, played by director Hunt . As a harried mother with innumerable kids and a likable oaf of a husband (James Belushi), Hunt again steals scenes effortlessly; Belushi is a comic revelation, better than he's been in years. You'll have the pleasant memories of both of these couples--one falling in love, one together for years--with you a long while after seeing this film. --Mark EnglehartMinnie Drivers new CD SEASTORIES explores new musical territory, from the rich sonic textures of "Beloved" to the bluesy soul of "Cold Dark River" to the seductive minor key groove of "Mockingbird" to the poetic chamber folk of "Lakewater Hair." Producer Marc "Doc" Dauer and guest musicians Ryan Adams and The Cardinals, Liz Phair and Rami Jaffee (The Wallfowers) match but never overwhelm Driver's vivid lyrics! , soaring melodies and spirited performances on this thoroughl! y pleasi ng collection of intelligent pop.

"A Triple A Triumph."- Chuck Taylor (Billboard Magazine)
"Driver proves to be Hollywood's soulful surprise." - Gabe Guarente (US Weekly)
"A Minnie-Splendored Thing... Anybody who dismissed Minnie Driver's debut as just the whim of another moonlighting actress will have a hard time denying her now." - Brian Mansfield (USA Today)
"Driver is clearly a confident performer and a songwriter with a style both evocative and economical." - Kevin Bronson (Los Angeles Times)Minnie Driver is hardly the first starlet to dive into pop music, but on her second album she stretches out for Americana credibility--and only partially succeeds. Writing every song on the album (with just a few musical assists from producer Marc "Doc" Dauer), she positions herself somewhere between Suzanne Vega and Sheryl Crow, getting help from alt-country and roots-rock illuminati Jonny Polansky, Neil Casal, Eric Heywood, Ryan Adams, and Rami Jaffee. T! he album has a wafting, acoustic-pop ambience, with a few country rockers driving home her serviceably sexy vocals. The problem is her songs barely rise to the level of a Jewel chapbook. Driver obsesses over her own erotic-spiritual journey, and can often create a plaintive, sensual mood, but the material lacks the universal touch of an inspired singer-songwriter. Head-scratching lines like "If love is the answer you seek, you're asking the wrong kind of questions" and "When my shadow cuts my life in two, I can see the best of me is you" suggest she yearns to make a personal statement. Crafting her stories or honing her hooks would have been more convincing. --Roy KastenMinnie Driver (GOOD WILL HUNTING) and Mary McCormack (GUN SHY) star as best friends who take on low-live thieves in this hilarious high-energy action-comedy. It all starts when Shannon (Drier), a nurse at a London emergency room, and Frances (McCormack), a struggling American actress, overhear bank ro! bbers on a radio scanner making off with a fortune. They make ! contact and demand a cut of the loot. But when the stubborn felons refuse to hand over a penny and threaten their lives in return, the girls decide to raise the stakes and give the thugs a run for their money! Packed with daring heists, double-crossings, and high-speed hilarity, HIGH HEELS AND LOW LIFES is the most fun you can have this side of the law.Supremely silly and entirely entertaining, High Heels and Low Lifes begins with a high-tech bank robbery--into the middle of which stumble Shannon (Minnie Driver) and Frances (Mary McCormack), who have gone out and gotten drunk because Shannon's boyfriend forgot her birthday. Thanks to this same boyfriend's surveillance equipment (on which he was creating his "urban noise symphony installation"), they end up with a cell phone number belonging to one of the thieves and decide to experiment with blackmail--an experiment that soon gets them into deep trouble. None of this is remotely plausible, but the breezy script keeps ! taking surprising twists, Driver and McCormack are an engaging duo (and they run to and fro in tight, stylish outfits), and the movie is directed with flair. Fun, frivolous, and unexpected. --Bret Fetzer

The Girl in the Park

  • GIRL IN THE PARK (DVD MOVIE)
Academy Award® Winner Geoffrey Rush, Kate Bosworth, Danny Huston and International sensation Jang Dong Gun star in this boldly original film that blends intense martial arts action with a dazzling visual style. After a lifetime of training in swordsmanship and hand-to-hand combat, the world’s most dangerous fighter (Jang) flees his homeland to start a new life in the American West. But soon the hunter becomes the hunted, and now the legendary warrior must wage a fierce, all-out battle against a renegade gang of outlaws and a pack of murderous assassins from his own past."This is the story of a sad flute, a laughing baby, and a weeping sword," a voice intones at the beginning of The Warrior's Way. It's also a story in which bullets fly, blood flows, and the body count mounts to the point where you'll need a calculator to keep track, often to the accompani! ment of a Verdi opera. Writer-director Sngmoo Lee's film centers on a lone warrior named Yang (Jang Dong-gun), "the greatest swordsman in the history of mankind," who has managed to wipe out all of his enemies save one, that being an adorable infant whom he refuses to murder, much to the displeasure of his boss, the leader of a band known as the Sad Flutes. For reasons never quite explained, our exiled hero soon finds himself in a thoroughly dilapidated town in the American west, where a half-finished ferris wheel looms and the inhabitants consist mainly of a bunch of worn-out circus performers (clowns, bearded lady, midget ringmaster, the whole shebang), the town drunk (Geoffrey Rush, a very long way from his Oscar-winning performance in Shine), and a beautiful young woman (Kate Bosworth, sporting a ridiculous accent) whose family was slaughtered by a local bad guy known as the Colonel (Danny Huston, suitably sadistic). Yang improbably takes over the town's laundry ! service, plants a garden, and cares for the baby, but we know ! it won't be long before his real talents will be needed--and sure enough, when the Colonel and his band of filthy wretches ride back into town, followed not long thereafter by a platoon of acrobatic ninjas sent to dispatch our hero, Yang and the locals have their hands full. All of this is fairly ridiculous, but the movie has a surreal, painterly look (imagine a cross between Dali, Fellini, and a graphic novel) that's never less than engaging. Jang is no Olivier, to say the least, but he's handsome and charismatic, and although the ending holds few surprises (especially once he instructs the Bosworth character in "the warrior's way"), genre fans are likely to be enchanted. --Sam GrahamWo young women work as maids in a maui resort community. With othing else to do with their time the girls decide to surf. Hey become very good and enter an all-male contest. Studio: Uni Dist Corp. (mca) Release Date: 03/28/2006 Starring: Kate Bosworth Matthew Davis Run time: 105 minutes Rati! ng: Pg13 Director: John StockwellNot to be confused with the 2002 feature film of the same title, Blue Crush is billed as the original all-girl surfer's movie, and it's guaranteed to please devotees of the sport. It's a mixed blessing, however, because it assumes familiarity with the sport and its superstars, dispensing with any educational or historical detail that would appeal to neophytes. After all, how can this film be dedicated to Rell Sunn (the pioneer of female competitive surfing, who died in of breast cancer in 1998 at age 47) and fail to explore her illustrious career? This haphazard approach extends to profiles of the young women who regard Sunn as their hero; we learn little of their backgrounds and how they rose to prominence on the waves. Blue Crush works best as a globetrotting, music-video tour of surfdom's prime locations (Samoa, Hawaii, the Gold Coast, South Africa) hosted by the sport's most prominent competitors, including several (Rochel! le Ballard, Megan Abubo, Sanoe Lake, Keala Kennelly, Kate Skar! ratt) wh o appeared in Universal's popular feature. It's a lot of fun, especially if you "hang ten" on a regular basis. --Jeff ShannonGIRL IN THE PARK - DVD Movie

"Driver proves to be Hollywood's soulful surprise." - Gabe Guarente (US Weekly)
"A Minnie-Splendored Thing... Anybody who dismissed Minnie Driver's debut as just the whim of another moonlighting! actress will have a hard time denying her now." - Brian Mansf! ield (US A Today)
The album has a wafting, acoustic-pop ambience, with a few country rockers driving home her serviceably sexy vocals. The problem is her songs barely rise to the level of a Jewel chapbook. Driver obsesses over her own erotic-spiritual journey, and can often create a plaintive, sensual mood, but the material lacks the universal touch of an inspired singer-songwriter. Head-scrat! ching lines like "If love is the answer you seek, you're asking the wrong kind of questions" and "When my shadow cuts my life in two, I can see the best of me is you" suggest she yearns to make a personal statement. Crafting her stories or honing her hooks would have been more convincing. --Roy KastenWho knew that when he ordered the special, he d get the dish of his life? David Duchovny ('the X-Files ) and Minnie Driver (Good Will Hunting) ignite sparks in this warm-hearted winner (JeffCraig, 'sixty Second Preview ) about a widower and a waitress who meet and fall in love. Featuring an incredible all-star cast, this hilarious romantic comedy delivers a lot of laughs, tears and joysthat will make your spirits soar. It took a lot of cajoling to get Bob (Duchovny), a recently widowed architect, to go on a blind date at a quirky Irish-Italian eatery. Once there, he's smitten instantly not with his date but with the sharp-witted waitress, Grace (Driver). With unsolici! tedhelp from Grace's matchmaking grandfather (Carroll O Connor! ), Bob a sks her out. After a series of misbegotten blind dates and almost-meetings, though, these two finally get together, and find that they fit seamlessly with each other. Despite their differences, they have a lot in common--in fact, quite a lot. It seems that the heart that now beats inside Grace's chest once belonged to Bob! 's wife (Joely Richardson), who died in a car crash.

They provide a quiet center in a film that has a fair amount of chaos in it, particularly due to Driver's extended family of Irish and Italian relatives (which occasionally tips the film into cutesy territory) and most hilariously to Driver's bes! t friend, played by director Hunt . As a harried mother with i! nnumerab le kids and a likable oaf of a husband (James Belushi), Hunt again steals scenes effortlessly; Belushi is a comic revelation, better than he's been in years. You'll have the pleasant memories of both of these couples--one falling in love, one together for years--with you a long while after seeing this film. --Mark Englehart
