Media Type: DVDFranco Zeffirelli's 1968 adaptation of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet was unique in its day for casting kids in the play's pivotal roles of, well, kids. Seventeen-year-old Leonard Whiting and 15-year-old Olivia Hussey play the titular pair, the Bard's star-crossed lovers who defy a running feud between their families in order to be together in love. Typically played on stage and in previous film productions by adult actors, the innocent look and rawness of Whiting and Hussey resonated at the time with a burgeoning youth movement from San Francisco to Prague. The tragic romance at the center of the story also clicked with anti-authority sentiments, but even without that, Zeffirelli scores points b! y validating the ideals and passions of strong-willed adolesce! nts. Les s successful are scenes requiring the actors to have a fuller grasp of the text, though the best thing going remains the unambiguous duel between Romeo and Tybalt (Michael York). Lavishly photographed by Pasquale de Santis on location in Italy, this Romeo and Juliet brought a different tone and dimension to a story that had become tiresome in reverential presentations. --Tom KeoghSeething with familial conflicts and yearnings, Three Priests offers a powerful journey. Dustin and Joe are brothers who are as different as can be: one a confident ladies man and the other shy and insecure. Their parents, retired sheriff Jake (Michael Parks of Kill Bill) and his wife, Rachel (Olivia Hussey of Romeo and Juliet) have worked hard to carve out a quiet and safe life for themselves and their family. Sir Walter Scott's epic novel of timeless romance and knightly daring comes to life! The year is 1194. At long last, the noble knight Wilfred of Ivanhoe (Anthony Andrews) has returned from the Crusades to regain his title and win the hand of his beloved Lady Rowena (Lysette Anthony). But first, he must defeat a villainous alliance that seeks to steal the throne from its rightful king. Steeds thunder and blades clash as the battle rages! With an all-star cast, featuring Academy Award® nominee James Mason (Best Actor in a Supporting Role, The Verdict, 1982), Olivia ! Hussey and Sam Neill, this is Ivanhoe as you've never seen it.! This 198 2, 180-minute television remake of the original MGM feature, produced 30 years before, is the rare makeover of a classic that works quite well under its own steam. Anthony Andrews plays the disinherited knight who returns from the Third Crusades and is determined to raise the ransom to free a kidnapped King Richard (Julian Glover). With his bid rebuffed by his estranged father (Michael Hordern), and the affection of the latter's ward, Rowena (Lysette Anthony), compromised, Ivanhoe looks toward the generosity of the beautiful Rebecca (Olivia Hussey)--whose father (James Mason) he rescued from anti-Semitic Normans--for help. But a plot by faithless friends to discredit Ivanhoe, and his subsequent partnership with Robin Hood (David Robb) to save the day, keep this story from slowing down even for a minute. Originally a miniseries, this production has enough breadth to provide lots of breathing room for the script and cast to mine all the drama they can from Sir Walter Scott's n! ovel. This is also a great-looking movie, with wall-to-wall pageantry, superb costumes--the works. --Tom Keogh An ill-fated houseful of sorority sisters are stalked by a psychopath during the christmas season. Studio: Koch International Release Date: 12/30/2008 Starring: Olivia Hussey Margot Kidder Run time: 98 minutesYou may never have heard of this neglected 1974 gem, but you've probably seen one of its many imitators. Olivia Hussey and Margot Kidder (also look for Andrea Martin of SCTV fame) star as two residents of a sorority house that is emptying out as Christmas approaches. The atmosphere is jolly and carefree, except for an ongoing series of menacing telephone calls, and, oh yes, we've just seen someone climb into the attic with apparent ill intent. Kidder does some scene-stealing as the bad girl, Hussey illustrates one of the downsides to having beautiful long '70s hair, and Keir Dullea does a nice turn as the creepy boyfriend. Director Robert Cla! rk knows that the unseen is far scarier than what can be seen ! and he r atchets up the tension beautifully, making good use of ominous shadows, and putting in nice touches like replacing the sound of a distraught woman's scream with the piercing ring of yet another ominous phone call. This is a terrific, well-made little movie that is genuinely sleep-with-the-lights-on scary. Don't miss it. --Ali Davis
